Defra has finally published its first estimate of the base fees that will be applied to packaging reported by producers as household packaging. This is packaging that is expected to become waste in households and is therefore the responsibility of the Local Authority for collection, either separately or in the residual waste. The money raised by the base fees will be used to pay Local Authorities for costs incurred in the collection, transport and recycling of packaging waste although exactly how has yet to be established.
This table shows the proposed base fees and the amount raised if the lower fee is applied to the amount of household packaging that has been projected in a recent Packflow report.
